How To Write Your Brand Story In 3 Simple Steps

What turns a business into a brand? Story. Your brand story is the way people remember you. A brand story should be written before your product hits the shelves or a press release goes out.

Why?

Because your brand story is what people will connect with, have faith in and ultimately be the reason why they’ll pick you over your competitors.

You might be thinking ‘We have an About page, isn’t that our brand story?’

It goes a whole lot deeper. Great brands make an emotional connection with their market. Customers not only want to invest in a good product but also to know there’s a brand behind it that aligns with their own values. Basically, they want to connect with brands that make them feel good.

Hmm. How do you go about writing your own brand story? Like this . . .

Step One: Start with your Why

Every business starts with a founder and a reason why. What’s your Why? What was the reason for starting your business? What were you hoping to achieve? Why were you passionate about it? What makes YOU the person to do it? Write down your Why and any memories, facts and achievements created along the way. Childhood memories are great for tapping into. Now, don’t write in a formal, old-school bio way. Write as you would speak to a friend.

Words to get you thinking . . .

I was always the kid who…

I remember when I was little I would …

There I was, aged 12 …

I never would have started out if it wasn’t for …

I knew I’d be a natural at … because I used to …

Over to you.

Step Two: Solve a problem and make it personal

Customers want to know your brand is there for the right reasons. Do you solve a problem, change the way people do things for the better or meet a specific need? Did you face this problem personally? Is that why you created the business? Ask yourself why this means so much to you. While this is personal, it’s also about your audience. Speak directly to your target market in a language they understand with a story that will resonate with them too. We all have problems – what were some hurdles along the way? Has this shaped the way you do business?

Words to get you thinking . . .

I wanted something more than …

I had to find it for myself because …

I set out because …

My mission was always … because …

I made it my business to …

Your turn.

Step Three: What makes you You (AKA, work your quirk)

A brand story MUST be true, authentic and honest. This isn’t ad copy or a souped-up business profile. It’s the heart of the thing. It must be written conversationally. Yep, from the heart. And it’s okay to be quirky. Quirky is good. So, what makes you original? Your originality is your currency online (there’s a lot of same same out there).

Words to get you thinking . . .

People say I’m …

I’m the girl with …

I work best when I’m …

It’s weird but I . . .

My Way means . . .

Jot down your first draft using the three steps. Now, it won’t be perfect. But it will be the start of your story. Your story can be used as a launching pad for all your media.

Great brand stories have personality, originality and best of all heart. Your story has heart too – dive in deep. Once you’ve found and crafted your brand story, you can fine-tune your brand voice.

Hmm, brand voice. That’s a different story . . .
